The inventors have put an insane amount of efforts into the backgrounds images, and they did their job well as it impresses me a lot. This is something rarely seen nowadays. Have you seen the shoujo light novel that get featured in the magazines? Their background restricts to some screentone, shapes in circles for the sun, in sihoullete for people, and in retangular for everything else, from cars, building, tables to houses. However, Gakusen toshi asterisk’s parents did not bore the readers out by that. They put an effort into their work, just like the Gakusen toshi asterisk, which is worth my appreciation and affecgion for the light novel. That’s why I decided to read it to the end.
By doing that, these assistant light novelkas have made their proclaim with the world that they know exactly the stuff they are doing. In the later chapters, the background quality has gone down somehow, but it is still impressive in comparison with other light novels nowadays. This is going to be a long release with many books and seasons, and I think the authors want the readers to trust them with the quality (many light novel art gets worse the more books it has), and these people have done their job well. I appreciate that the authors want to make promises to their readers. All in all, I recommend the Gakusen toshi asterisk to all the readers that are looking for some fightings, shounen, team work, philosophies and psychology thrillers out there.
With that said, the characters art here should be taken with a grain of salt. They go with the stereotypes of light novel, with disportioned body: big head, huge eyes, triangular nose, slim limbs and short torso. The reactions of the characters are over the top most of the time. Later in the series, the bodies are better drawn except for special characters that are supposed to have weird body shapes.
Have you read the Gakusen toshi asterisk light novel? I have, and I am going to review it below. Because I came to the light novel quite late, I had the chance to finish it in one setting, but that is something I could not do with other light novels, as I need some break so the bore can die out. However, Gakusen toshi asterisk offers a lot of interesting things to me. For the first chapters, this series reminds me a lot of the light novel that feature a lot of violence from another species, like Attack on Titan to Deadman in Wonderland, from the gore to the main characters, all are adapted from each other somehow. And as the previous series did not meet my expectation, I thought that Gakusen toshi asterisk would not be so interesting as people have said it to be. And I in fact expected it to suck. Come on, show me how bad you will go, how soon will I get bored of you? However, as I see the backgrounds on some pages, as well as the overall atmosphere of the series as portrayed by the first book, I knew I was wrong, and disappointment will not come to me anytime soon. The camera angles, the way the characters come on the screen, all make me excited ( you don’t see that a lot of light novels nowadays, except for the Gakusen toshi asterisk which requires a lot of scenes in details to make you feel the mood.
That is the situation of the light novel market nowadays. Some famous series are bad, and only a few are good. You have to be careful with what you read, though, because some of them are quite gruesome or sensitive on the topics. I remember the old days, where light novel with adult scenes will be marked clearly so. It was quite brutal at the time, but we are warned with what we get ourselves into. However, some sensitive light novel nowadays do not have a warning on its cover.
